Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is Web Mail? [Top]

Web Mail is an application that allows you to check your email remotely, when you are away from your home or office. You can read and respond to your messages without having to connect to your Outlook email client.

Can I use Web Mail with any browser? [Top]

For an optimum experience, we suggest using the Web Mail application with the most recent versions of Internet Explorer. Another browser can be used, but this is not recommended.

Who is Web Mail for? [Top]

The Web Mail application is for all residential and business customers who have Internet access with Cablevision.

Are there any charges when I use Web Mail? [Top]

No. The Web Mail application is provided FREE OF CHARGE by Cablevision to all of its Internet customers.

How much storage is provided with Web Mail? [Top]

The Web Mail applicationís maximum storage capacity is 10 MB. This volume includes all messages, and their attachments, stored in "Sent Items", "Drafts" and "Trash", as well as the "Contacts" items stored in Web Mail.

Please note that the 10 MB storage excludes messages displayed in the "Inbox", since these actually reside on your principal email server, rather than on the Web Mail server.

What happens when the maximum limit is reached? [Top]

When the 10 MB storage reaches its maximum capacity, an indicator at the bottom of the window will notify you that the limit has been reached and that Sent Messages will no longer be saved until you have freed up some space.

Is my email secure with Web Mail? [Top]

Yes. The authentication process (user name and password) as well as the email in the Web Mail application use SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) with a 256-bit encryption key to encrypt the data when you log in and also when you send and receive messages.

Is my email protected from viruses with Web Mail? [Top]

Your email transits the Cablevision servers BEFORE you read it using the Web Mail application or any other personal email client that you may use at home or at the office (such as Outlook).

To protect its customersí messages, Cablevision filters out viruses and all potentially malicious emails before they reach its servers. Any infected or unsolicited message is automatically destroyed, before it even reaches you.

Can I attach images or documents to my email? [Top]

You can include any kind of attachment with your email. However, every time you send a message, a copy is stored in the "Sent Items" folder, thus reducing the amount of storage available in your Web Mail environment. To ensure that you do not exceed the 10 MB storage limit, we recommend that you clean out your "Sent Items", "Drafts" and "Trash" folders regularly.

If I delete a message in my Web Mail inbox, does it stay in the server so I can read it after in my Outlook (or other personal software) Inbox on my home or office computer? [Top]

No. It is very important to know that any action performed on the messages in the Web Mail "Inbox" (for instance, delete) is considered to have been performed directly on the Cablevision email server.

If you delete a message in the Web Mail "Inbox", that message is fully deleted on the Cablevision email server.

You should also know that if you read a new message in the Web Mail "Inbox", the message will not be marked as "read" when you open your email client at home or at the office.

Why arenít the new messages in the "Inbox" identified in bold? [Top]

The Web Mail application only displays messages that are in the Cablevision email server Inbox; it does not manage the "read" or "unread" feature.

If I send a message with Web Mail, will I find this message in the "Sent Items" folder of my email client when I arrive home or at the office? [Top]

No. Messages sent from the Web Mail application remain in the "Sent Items" folder of the Web Mail application. If you want to have access to this message from your email client once you get to your home or office, you must add your email address to the messageís recipients list. Thus, you will receive your own copy of the message in the "Inbox" of your email client (and by the same token, you will see it in the Web Mail "Inbox").

Can I import the addresses in my Outlook Contacts to the Web Mail Contacts? [Top]

  1. In the Microsoft Outlook "File" menu, click on "Import and Export".
  2. Click on "Export to a file", then click "Next".
